  ASSEMBLY

MDO 123. Assenbly of Confessing Congrgations ‘Look, look, crows, crows . . . many crows, they are carrying mother away !’ Evil spirits, they thought the child was possessed by evil spirits. They sent for one of the court Balian, Shamans with magical powers, and he came running with Holy Water and chanted Mantras. Later, it was found that the boy had called out just as his Mother died.

  CRICKET

MDO 121. Lam Dand Gol Pind Dharpakad Pratiyogita “Indian cricket, and the youngsters themselves, are dealing with issues inconceivable a few summers ago. Riches and all the attendant temptations are thrown at them before they have started shaving regularly. It's not their fault. It's no one's fault. That is the marketplace. Inevitably, though, it can distract attention from the long struggle towards mastery. Cricket does not give itself away; it expects players to apply themselves, to think and study and seek. It plays tricks, too, pretends that sixes and slower balls and the other shortcuts matter. Cricket sets traps, flatters players and calls them kings when they are barely princes.”

  BLACK HOLE

MDO 126. THE BLACK HOLE

Scientists have glimpsed the event horizon of a black hole for the very first time. The world-first image shows the supermassive black hole at the centre of M87, a neighbouring galaxy to our own Milky Way The image is the result of a seven year project linking telescopes all over the world to create ‘a dish the size of the planet’ The fact the image matches so closely to predictions is a confirmation of Einstein’s theory of general relativity. Until now, every image of a black hole you have ever seen has been an artist’s impression. “We’ve been studying black holes so long that sometimes it’s easy to forget that none of us has actually seen one,” said France Cordova, director of the US National Science Foundation, at one of seven simultaneous press conferences where the scientists announced their findings to the world.

  BEYOND EVIL

MDO 122. BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL

Beyond Good and Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche

At present every kind of dogma stands with sad and discouraged mien. If, indeed, it stands at all! For there are scoffers who maintain that it has fallen, that all dogma lies on the ground—nay more, that it is at its last gasp. But to speak seriously, there are good grounds for hoping that all dogmatizing in philosophy, whatever solemn, whatever conclusive and decided airs it has assumed, may have been only a noble puerilism and tyronism; and probably the time is at hand when it will be once and again understood WHAT has actually sufficed for the basis of such imposing and absolute philosophical edifices as the dogmatists have hitherto reared: perhaps some popular superstition of immemorial time (such as the soul-superstition, which, in the form of subject- and ego-superstition, has not yet ceased doing mischief.

  TIGHTROPE

MDO 34. TIGHTROPE

With cold eyes and indifferent mind the spectators regard the work. Connoisseurs admire the ‘skill’ as one admires a tightrope walker, enjoy the ‘quality of painting’ as one enjoys a pasty But hungry souls go hungry away. The vulgar herd stroll through the rooms and pronounce the pictures ‘nice’ or ‘splendid ‘ Those who could speak have said nothing those who could hear have heard nothing.

  MAD TUBA

MDO 35. MAD TUBA

The sun melts all of Moscow down to a single spot that like a mad tuba starts all of the heart and all of the soul vibrating. But no, this uniformity of red. It is only the final chord of a symphony that takes every colour to the zenith of life that like the fortissimo of a great orchestra is both compelled and allowed by Moscow to ring out.

quoted in Hajo Duchting, Kandinsky, Cologne, 2007, p. 7

  GITANO

MDO 126. TWELVE

Art has the capacity of purging emotions while expressing schools of thought. It can be an interchangeable vessel that lies at the core of many communities. Art has the power to reveal a reality that is often not otherwise examined. This truth found within art, lends itself to dance. Dance is a series of motions with an organized intention that has an aesthetic and inherent value. It is an empirical indicator of the body’s history that has meaning, a purpose, it can create and nurture traditions, while serving as a creative outlet. Flamenco as an art form, highlights the history of the Gitano community. It reveals sexist, classist, and racist ideas that revolve around the Gitano. Flamenco embodies the history of the Gitano community and underscores the contradictions of the region. It is a form of oral history where behaviors, gestures, poetry, dances, music, and emotions all come together to document the past of a people, as well as a region. Flamenco was born from the interaction between the Gadje and Gitanos. The roots of flamenco stem from the everyday life of the Gitano community. It was their truth which lent itself to the corporal language now known as flamenco. Flamenco and Its Gitanos.

MDO 34. HO CHI MINH

Ho Chi Minh : From ‘Prison Diary’

Suddenly a flute sounds / a nostalgic note Sadly the music rises / it’s tune is close to sobbing Over a thousand miles / across mountains and rivers Journey’s an aching grief /

We seem to see a woman Climbing a far off tower / to watch for someone’s return. For prisoners, / there is no alcohol nor flowers But the night is so lovely / how can we celebrate it?

I go to the air-hole / and stare up at the moon And through the air-hole / the moon smiles at the poet

  LIBAI

MDO 26. THINKING OF LI BAI AT THE END OF THE SKYby Du Fu

Cold wind rises at the end of the sky,
What thoughts occupy the gentleman's mind?
What time will the wild goose come?
The rivers and lakes are full of autumn's waters.
Literature and worldly success are opposed,
Demons exult in human failure.
Talk together with the hated poet,
Throw a poem into Miluo river.

This poem dates from 759. The wild goose is a symbol of autumn, letters and travellers in difficulties; The hated poet is Qu Yuan, a poet of the fourth century BC who was rejected by his king and drowned himself in the Miluo river; another exiled poet later threw some verses into the river as an offering to him.

  SWELL PLACE

MDO 57. A SWELL PLACE

Between 1961 and 1974 the Hay Jail was used by the NSW Child Welfare Department as an Institution for girls. Girls who misbehaved at the Parramatta Girls' Home were sent to Hay where they encountered a system of strict discipline. The girls were allowed ten minutes twice a day to talk between themselves Hay was the most inhumane place that anyone could be in and it was in Australia.

  METAL

MDO 97. METAL

Let us have it plain: my society is comprised of metal-worshipers. They pray to metal, are owned by metal, and metal uses them; it shoots them, it stabs them. I witness its sycophants, grave zombies, moved about humorlessly as its agents. My minions are spiritually rapt as the ages climaxes in gunpowder. One notes that, upon first being handed a rifle -- by Burton or Speke? -- a chieftain blithely shot one of his own lackeys, expressing radiant joy as the man tumbled dead. Do not stop there, happy Klansman, but watch with me early in the morning as I come in from work: across the street here in the clean "burbs" your white policeman goes reverently to his car with a deer rifle coddled in his right arm like a precocious, beautiful child. This man lives with a pistol on his hip all week, but that is not enough, no, he is devout and it is the Christmas season. His own cowardice, affirmed by the use of guns, would not occur to him any more than the cowardice of God. The gun lobby, oh my peaceful friends, you may hate, but first you had better understand that it is a religion, only secondarily connected to the Bill of Rights. The thick-headed, sometimes even close to tearful, gaze you get when chatting with one of its partisans emanates from the view that they're holding a piece of God.
